Hi friends,
I’m thrilled to share that How to Transition Into Leadership …and Why that Changes Everything by Bryan Yager is officially out in the world. 🎉
Recently, I sat down with Bryan to talk about why he wrote this book, who it’s for, and what he hopes it will change.
How this book came to life
Bryan has spent more than 45 years in management and organizational development, including serving as Vice President of Management and Organizational Development at Albertsons. For the last several years, he’s been in what he calls his “give-back phase,” a time to share what he’s learned from hundreds of real-world leadership wins and mistakes.
In 2018, after leading a major workshop series, a CEO asked him, “How do I keep this alive?” Bryan’s answer became his weekly short, practical emails on leadership and life that he named Monday Morning Minute. He’s now written over 250 of them.
A friend finally said, “You’ve already written two or three books. Just pick your favorites and share them.” That’s the origin of How to Transition Into Leadership.
Who this book is for
While the title focuses on the transition into leadership, the content reaches far beyond that first promotion. This book is for:
- New or aspiring leaders wondering, “Can I really do this?”
- Experienced leaders who privately feel like imposters.
- High-performing “super doers” who are exhausted from doing everything themselves.
Most organizations promote their best “doer” into management and expect it to work out. Bryan names the pattern: leaders who never stop doing and never fully step into leading. This book gives them language, perspective, and practical tools to make that mindset shift.
A few ideas you’ll find inside
As we talked through some of Bryan’s favorite parts of the book, a few themes rose to the top. Much of his work centers on confidence and the stories we tell ourselves. In one section, “Would You Say That to a Friend?” he invites readers to examine their inner dialogue and treat themselves with the same grace they’d offer someone they care about. He also returns often to the idea of leading through influence rather than authority.
Another metaphor that stood out in our conversation comes from Bryan’s first career as a photographer. Every day, he reminds us, we choose the “lens” we look through and where we point our focus. Choose anger, pessimism, or fear, and you’ll find plenty of it. But choose curiosity, possibility, and connection, and an entirely different world comes into view. And woven throughout all of this is one of the core lessons of the book: escaping that “super doer mode.” Your value as a leader isn’t in doing everything yourself! Instead, Bryan encourages leaders to grow their people, build trust, shape culture, and create a space where others can thrive.
These are the kinds of insights that make this book a powerful gift for a new manager finding their footing or a seasoned leader questioning their abilities.
